Our Services
We provide advice and support for a variety of issues, including money, benefits, housing, consumer, immigration, energy, family law, legal and employment problems.
We are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and provide a specialist money/debt advice service which includes income maximisation, advice on options for dealing with debts, help to create financial statements and liaise with creditors.
We provide specialist energy advice which includes advice on energy deals, energy savings tips, additional financial support including benefits and grants, how to address debt/payment issues, advice on joining the Priority Services Register and advice on how to understand bills.
We operate a digital inclusion project to help alleviate and prevent digital exclusion in North East Derbyshire by providing digital skills training and access to devices and data.
Our Adviceline is the backbone of our organisation, solving problems on the spot or directing clients to appointments at our other projects. As well as appointment sessions in the two districts we offer drop-in services in Clay Cross, Killamarsh, and Bolsover, and also provide email advice.

Our History
Our journey began in November 1974 with a modest setup in Clay Cross, supported by local funding to employ a part-time organiser and a small team of volunteers. Over the years, with the backing of the North East Derbyshire District Council, we gained stability and expanded our reach.
Collaborating with Bolsover District Council in the early 2000s, we established a grant to serve their communities. Partnerships with Derbyshire County Council Public Health underscored the importance of advice services in reducing health inequalities related to income, employment practices, and housing conditions. This enabled us to bring much-needed advice to numerous communities via GP practices.
Today, we have grown from a single office with a part-time organiser and a couple of volunteers to an organisation with 27 paid staff and 28 volunteers, providing advice in 28 locations across North East Derbyshire and Bolsover Districts. Our main office remains in Clay Cross, but our outreach work allows us to offer face-to-face provision throughout the two districts.
Our volunteers
Our volunteers are at the heart of our organisation. With a variety of backgrounds and experiences they dedicate their time and skill to operate our core services and reach more people in need. We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities that provide valuable experience, training, and the chance to make a real difference in the community.
Our funding
As a registered charity, we receive no funding from central government. Our work relies entirely on grants and donations from our generous supporters. Core Grant support continues to be provided by North East Derbyshire District Council, Bolsover District Council and more recently The Access to Justice Fund (Improving Lives Through Advice). We have numerous project funding with Derbyshire County Council being our largest funder.
Governance
We are governed by our memorandum and articles of association and by seven individuals who make up our board of trustees. Details of our trustee appointments and our annual accounts are available here on the Companies House website.
