With recent changes reducing the eligibility for the Winter Fuel Allowance to only those receiving Pension Credit, residents of North East Derbyshire and Bolsover are being urged to take advantage of free benefit checks to see if they qualify for support. Pension Credit, a means-tested benefit that tops up income for those of state pension age, not only opens the door to the Winter Fuel Allowance but also provides access to a range of other benefits.
Those eligible for Pension Credit may also receive a free TV licence (for over 75s), free dental care, free glasses, and possible increases in housing benefit and council tax reductions. It is therefore worth claiming even if you are only entitled to a small amount.
Many people mistakenly believe they don’t qualify due to income or savings, but the first £10,000 of savings is not counted, and homeowners are also eligible.
Extra Pension Credit may be available for those responsible for children, those who are disabled, carers, or those who are both disabled and caring for someone else. Even a small amount of Pension Credit can unlock significant financial help.
At Citizens Advice North East Derbyshire we are here to check your entitlement and if needed we can also help with the claim. All we need to assess someone’s benefit entitlement is details of income (i.e. pensions, wages, benefits received) and total amounts of savings, for you and your partner if you are a couple.
To get a free benefit check or assistance with claiming Pension Credit, ring us on 0808 250 5702, option 4 (Mon-Fri 9am-2pm) or check our website for details on how to see us in person in locations throughout the districts of Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. https://citizensadvicened.
